An apportunity to uplift Bhadrapur Again – Pankaj Pradhanang
Nepal has attracted a great number of adventure seekers and nature lovers ever since the country was opened for international travelers in 1955 AD. Generally speaking international travelers are attracted by its mountains, trekking in the mid-hills, UNESCO heritage sites in Kathmandu valley and National Parks in southern terai.

According to a 2022 report by the World Bank, the tourism industry contributed about 6.7 percent to Nepal's GDP, while its total impact was US$2.2 billion. It is estimated that the sector supported 1.2 million jobs and has provided a steady and comparatively good income for a large number of Nepalis, including reasonable incomes for marginalized population.

The fact remains Koshi pradesh has far less presence in the national tourism pie if we keep Everest region aside. Furthermore, Bhadrapur seems to be far less aware and concerned about growing its presence as a tourism destination within the province.

Why tourism is Bhadrapur is not a distant dream:

I recall one of my trips to Tuscany (Italy) in 2014 when I got an opportunity to visit a few local farms that hosted tourists from Germany and other European countries. It was wonderful to learn that the agri-tourism program aimed to promote and protect rural culture, local food and wine traditions, and agricultural development – while allowing farm owners to diversify their income through tourism.

A question came to mind, why couldn’t Jhapa district strive for positioning it as an agri-tourism destination, catering to the city dwellers in Kathmandu who are looking for authentic rural experiences within Nepal. Bhadrapur, one of the oldest municipalities in Nepal, has a population of over 67, 000 with 195,672 hectares of agricultural land growing cereal crops (paddy, wheat and maize) as well as vegetable and fruits in a traditional way.

Emerging trends in Global Tourism (2023)   :

  • As per Expedia, travelers seem to prefer unconventional stays for wellness breaks, forest bathing (Sylvo therapy), Chakra session, food book camps and meditation sessions.
  • As per booking.com, 42% of their travelers are looking for a break that focuses on mental and physical health or mindfulness retreats.
  • Multi-generational travel is on the rise. Families are now seeking trips to reconnect and bond with their loved ones.
  • As per ATTA (Adventure Travel & Trade Association), adventure travelers are seeking slow-travel experiences and increasing desire for unfamiliar destinations and itineraries.
Does Bhadrapur have competitive strength to shine as a Tourism destination:

  • Gateway to Eastern Nepal: Beyond its own attractions, Bhadrapur Municipality serves as a convenient starting point for exploring eastern Nepal. Travelers often use Bhadrapur as a base for visiting destinations such as Ilam, the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, and the hill stations of Taplejung. It also serves as an important entry point for travelers entering Nepal from the Indian state of West Bengal and Bihar.
  • Transportation Hub: Bhadrapur has a domestic airport, Bhadrapur Airport, which connects the municipality to other parts of eastern Nepal. It also serves as a transit point for travelers heading to popular destinations in Darjeeling, Sikkim and then to Bhutan overland. Presently Panitanki border in India is closed for international travelers which has resulted in huge loss to local tourism economy in both countries.
  • Cultural Diversity: The municipality is known for its cultural diversity, with inhabitants from various ethnic groups such as the Rajbansi, Santhal, Meche, Limbu, Rai, Brahmin, Chhetri, and Newar communities. This diversity is reflected in the local traditions, festivals, and cuisine. This can greatly boost the opportunity to promote indigenous tourism while highlighting the diversity and harmony.
  • Natural Beauty: Bhadrapur Municipality is surrounded by lush greenery, fertile plains, and scenic landscapes typical of the Terai region. Getting a glimpse of Kanchenjunga Mountain on a clear autumn day can captivate any visitor.
  • Religious and archeological Sites: The municipality is home to several religious sites and temples that attract pilgrims and visitors. One notable religious site is Kichakbadh in the southern part which can attract a great number of visitors round the year who are interested in pre-historic stories and archaeological sites.
  • Tea Gardens: Many people would not know that there are many tea gardens in Bhadrapur hence its also an important tea-producing area focusing on CTC. It also serves as a gateway to the nearby Tea gardens of Ilam or Darjeeling at a 2 to 4 hrs driving distance.
SAVE Tourism: Nepal is striving to promote a destination for SAVE (Sustainable, Academic, Volunteer, and Education ) Tourism. Having one of the oldest public schools in Nepal, Bhadrapur can cater to domestic and international travelers looking for an authentic experience of SAVE Tourism.

Overall, Bhadrapur Municipality offers a blend of cultural, natural, and people making it an important tourism destination. Needless to say, tourism can empower local youth through innovation in agriculture and promoting tourism attraction.

Bhadrapur can learn a great deal from other destinations like Bandipur in Nepal or Tuscany in Italy. To turn this into reality, the local leaders and planners should come up with a well-crafted plan and training on the basics of hospitality with a focus on hygiene. When properly planned and executed, domestic as well as international travelers will enjoy a slice of rural life, a rendez-vous with local people, and to experience the warmth of eastern Nepali hospitality at its best. Needless to say, this will increase the income of local people, empower local families and ensure transfer of knowledge/expansion of the network as well.

About us

Bhadrapur Municipality, nestled in the fertile plains of Jhapa District in Eastern Nepal, has long been a place of cultural and communal pride. A significant number of its residents have migrated to the vibrant federal capital, Kathmandu, for diverse purposes—whether for education, professional opportunities, artistic pursuits, political engagement, business ventures, or research. Recognizing the need to unite and support the Bhadrapur community in Kathmandu, the "Bhadrapur Sarokar Samaj, Kathmandu" was founded. This organization aims to foster a strong sense of unity, brotherhood, and mutual assistance among the residents. The society was officially established on March 16, 2018, following a large assembly of Bhadrapur residents, with the support of the Bhadrapur Municipality, at the Hardik Hotel in Bagbazar, Kathmandu.
