Historical Background
In 1773, during the reign of King Ran Bahadur Shah, Nepal's borders extended westward to Kumaon and Garhwal, and eastward to Tista. In 1814, the British attacked and occupied a place called Danpur, located between Biratnagar and Rangeli, and on November 28, 1815, the Sugauli Treaty was signed. This marked the Mechi River as the permanent eastern international boundary. At that time, Jhapa District fell under Morang Goshwara; later, when Morang Goshwara moved to Jhapa Bazaar (previously Kumarkhod Village Development Committee), the district retained the name Jhapa. After 2007 B.S., Goshwara shifted to the then Chandragadhi Village Development Committee, establishing Chandragadhi as the district headquarters. Later, parts of Chandragadhi were merged into Bhadrapur Municipality, officially making it the district headquarters.
Bhadrapur Municipality is located in the eastern Terai region of Nepal, situated at an altitude ranging from 68 meters to 113 meters above sea level. Geographically, this municipality extends between 26°25’21” N to 26°37’00” N latitude and 88°06’45” E to 88°02’09” E longitude. To the east, it borders the Indian states of West Bengal and Bihar; to the west, it is adjacent to Birtamod Municipality and Haldibari Rural Municipality; to the north, it is bordered by Mechinagar Municipality, and to the south, by Kachankawal Rural Municipality. Situated in the basin area of the Mechi River and Deuniya River, Bhadrapur is a city with fertile and irrigated land, flat terrain of the Terai region, and potential for urban expansion along the Mechi Highway.
"Inspired by the grand vision of becoming the 'Commercial Gateway of the Eastern Region, the Prosperous Bhadrapur Municipality,' Bhadrapur has been striving to become a model municipality by effectively utilizing its duties and responsibilities. Since the elected representatives took charge, the local government has made significant strides in physical development, while also pursuing initiatives in education, health, agriculture, and human resource development. Bhadrapur Municipality is also a historical and one of the oldest municipalities in the country. It is the district headquarters of Jhapa, equipped with a well-facilitated airport, a provincial-level hospital in Province One, all government offices, and the provincial training center Kalbalguri. As the existence of the entire district is intertwined with Bhadrapur's status, it faces the challenge of achieving excellence in all sectors while also having the opportunity to prove its superiority.
